PAN AMERICAN JOURNEY PART X – NICARAGUA
Did you know that baseball is more popular sport than soccer in Nicaragua? Horsefeathers team rider Zuzana Salz brings us news from the Pan American Journey. Enjoy it now!
Batter up! Here’s Nicaragua where baseball is more popular than soccer! It’s a pretty big country but only 5.5 million people live here, and most of them are concentrated around the lake of “Lago de Nicaragua”. Ometepe island is made up of two volcanoes joined together in this lake and is one of Nicaragua’s top destinations.
We took a break from the van, or the van took a break from us, and we left it on the mainland and took the Che Guevara ferry over to the island. We rented bikes which weighed about 20kg, rented horses that you had to pull up the hills but weren’t afraid to galloped along the beach like in a cheesy add, hiked the muddy trails up to the Maderas volcano which has a lake at the top, took a shower under the San Ramon Waterfalls and left with a smile on our face!
After this we returned to the Pacific coast to try our hand at the waves around San Juan del Sur, the hot spot for surfing and partying. About 10km northward is Maderas beach, supposedly the best surfing in Nicaragua, they say. But each surf spot has it’s days, just like people, and so while we were there the wave’s weren’t the ones you rave about. We checked out other beaches like the nice horseshoe shaped beach called Remate. Here the waves were quite gentle and fun, perfect for beginners. A little further down south is relaxing beach Hermosa, a long beach with decent waves where you can just hang-out and chill in the hammocks. It was here where my leash snapped for the first time ever and I ended up getting grilled by the waves….that’s when you realize how good of a swimmer you are!!!
Anyway there are still quite a few reports on armed robberies in Nicaragua, which we luckily didn’t come across, but we did have our van broken into in Granada and lost several things, but nothing we can’t replace. Another incident which was worse was when a guy was trying to steal some stuff out of the van through a slightly opened window while we were sleeping! We yelled at him and he took off like a bullet!!! Sometimes you have to sleep with your Eyes Wide Open! Anyway we’re off to Costa Rica, the Switzerland of Central America!
