At Horsefeathers, we realize that being able to spend time on our favorite playgrounds in the mountains requires a responsible approach. Responsibility for us is not just about sustainability, which is a concept that has been trending in recent years and often just a label that sells. Responsibility for us means going deeper. Think and learn before we act. Therefore, we believe that taking the right steps, taken at the right time, is the key. We do not want to waste natural finite resources of the Earth, nor the energy of people with whom we create quality things for you, in which you create quality experiences.
The Horsefeathers brand was founded by two snowboard enthusiasts and mountain lovers - Hanuš and Pavel. A team of people who share the same passion has gradually formed around them. It's no secret that at any time we have the opportunity to escape to the mountains - we go for it! We know how it feels when you have to sit in the office and there is powder out there! After all, the mountains are our office.
Steps we are taking
Long before this topic became a popular subject, we were interested in our impact on the environment and the people we work with. We have always wanted to know not only who sells our product, but also who makes it and where and how it is made. We want to enjoy mountains without remorses and ride in things made by people in the best and safest conditions for work.
The development and growth of the environmental movement in recent years is a positive confirmation of a change in progress and we are more than interested in the new possibilities. On the other hand, there are many brands, products and claims that only ride the wave of "eco" and "sustainability", without going deep enough to make sure that the solutions offered really make sense.
Making the right steps at the right time is the approach we have chosen in order to guide our long-term communication with the various suppliers. Technologies are constantly evolving and what was impossible a few years ago is a fully usable process today. New scientific discoveries are coming at a rapid pace, but not all have been shown to work as expected on time. Therefore, we try to do our best when choosing tested solutions from reputable manufacturers. Such continuous steps allow us to produce bulletproof and responsible outerwear, which we proudly supply to our customers.
Where we produce
In our collections you will find streetwear and outerwear pieces. You probably already know that. What you may not know is that most of our streetwear collection is made in the European Union. This means that this reduces CO2 emissions, as we have eliminated transport between production, storage and retail.
Our technical outerwear items are manufactured in factories in Asia. We make sure that the conditions in which people make our snowboard jackets and pants are safe and offer a positive environment for work. And what is the best way to verify that this is really the case? See for yourself! That's why Pavel, co-founder of Horsefeathers, and Pepe, our lead designer, spent months on factory floors working with owners and employees. In order to produce bulletproof technical outerwear, factories and the people who work in them must be very skilled, have the best know-how and work in a good workplace. The factories in which we produce are Bluesign and WRAP certified.
During these visits, we established lasting relationships with our producers, which in many cases grew into friendships. Most of them even visited us at our headquarters in Pilsen to find out how we manage our company. We probably don't even have to mention that the fact that we are based in the city where the best beer is produced in the world is just a plus of these meetings.
After several years of analyzing the possibilities of truly responsible and affordable solutions for our packaging, we are ready to present the following main steps that we have taken and implemented in our collections:
Streetwear recycled packaging from LDPE waste
The packaging in which we pack our streetwear pieces is made from the waste of classic LDPE packaging. They are manufactured in the EU, again minimizing transport and thus eliminating CO2 emissions. We have also managed to reduce the size of the package by about half by smartly folding our products, which again saves emissions and space during transport. In addition, these packages are self-closing, will not be destroyed the first time they are used and can be reused.
Outerwear biodegradable packaging
It is important that products that are coming from Asia will arrive in a good condition and undamaged that’s why we have chosen biodegradable plastic packaging with P-life® certification for this transport.
P-life®: The world’s only proven oxo-biodegradable plastic additive. Our whole outerwear and technical apparel collection will now come in P-life® Oxo-biodegradable plastics. P-Life® oxo-biodegradable technology is an ef- fective way to accelerate plastic degradation without harming the environment or compromising functionality. P-Life®is an additive that allows manufacturers to custom tailor the life of every plastic product they make, with- out lowering the product performance. When added to polyolefin polymers, such as polyethylene (PE, LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE) and polypropylene (PP), P-Life® creates molecular scissions in the polymer chain, allowing oxygen to bond to the polymer and break it down into smaller and smaller compounds. These can be then naturally consumed by microorganisms, which convert the compounds into organic biomass. This technology results in a plastic product, that will begin to degrade in few years (or even months) after its use, instead of decades or centuries of polluting the Earth.
Technologies we use
UltraTech® is a range of high quality materials developed in collaboration with leading Taiwanese manufacturers. Designed to maximize performance across diverse conditions, UltraTech® fabrics are manufactured in fully controlled facilities, using ad- vanced processes: The technical outer shell is laminated with a fully waterproof and breathable membrane, then treated with a water repellent DWR (Durable Water Repellent) film. This process guarantees a high performance fabric that is rugged and robust.
ULTRATECH® RECYCLED SHELL
Developed in collaboration with Taiwanese manufacturers who specialize in technical fabrics and yarns, this is our second generation of UltraTech® Recycled. To maintain the shell material’s key properties, the fabric is made from 50 % recycled polyester made from used PET bottles and 50 % virgin polyester.
CLO® ECO VIVO INSULATION
The unique Clo fiber construction with Vivo concept maximizes breathability and thermal comfort.
Vivo Eco is made up of 93 % recycled fibers from plastic bottles making this product a very eco-friendly insulation. The fibers are extruded from recycled plastic bottles and 40 plastic bottles make up 1kg of the Eco93 fibers.
This unique design will give you great performance for warmth and yet giving an increase in breathability by 30 %. The insulation is penetrated by a series of small apertures that enhance breathability without decreasing the thermal insulated performance of the insulation. These holes through the insulation trap air to create a fantastic warmth consistence when in low activity, but also allow for the air and water vapor to flow through very quickly when the body temperature increases through high activity making this the most breathable insulation on the market today. With its great flexibility yet stable structure it provides excellent comfort when used garments.
PRIMALOFT BIO INSULATION
The first-ever 100 % recycled, biodegradable synthetic fiber.
Back in the days, we were one of the first board- sports brand that started using Primaloft as the ultimate hi-tech alternative to down insulation and Primaloft quickly became and important part of our high-end lines. Primaloft never saw recycling as the final step, that’s why they are constantly searching for the next solution. Introducing now Primaloft® BioTM, the first-ever 100 % recycled, biodegradable synthetic fiber, we are again one of the first boardsports brand who joined the Pri- maloft Bio Community.
Primaloft® BioTM brings a new approach to sustain- ability without compromising Primaloft‘s indus- try-leading performance and comfort throughout the life cycle of the garment. This offers a previ- ously unattainable level of performance and sus- tainability across synthetic insulation. Ultimately, saving tons of microplastics from our landfills and oceans. In accelerated test conditions, Primaloft® BioTM fibers reach near complete biodegradation in just one year, while standard polyester remains almost completely intact. It’s another major mile- stone in Primaloft journey toward a more sustain- able world. Primaloft® BioTM fibers break down ata highly-accelerated rate in landfills and oceans because they are optimized to be more appetizing to the naturally- occurring microbes in these specific environments. These microbes allow the synthetic insulation or synthetic fabric to return to natural elements including: CO2, methane gas, water and biomass.
